Try a plain tea bag - nothing fancy required. Just get a lipton tea bag, soak in hot/warm water, allow to cool to a comfortable (and safe!)temperature, then apply to ulcerated area as needed. Not only does it greatly decrease discomfort, but it assists in healing as well. The acid that is naturally present in the tea leaves (I can't remember the name of it currently!)is the active ingredient. I discovered this when I had braces (the metal brackets caused irritation to the tender mucosal tissue of my lips, and the result was a sore that resembled a canker sore, and hurt like hell! It works well for any mouth sore, including viral (i.e., herpes). Good luck!
