A relative was diagnosed with Mersa. She spent about two weeks in the hospital. Anybody who wanted to visit her had to wear gloves, a robe and a facial mask. She was then moved to the geriatrics unit. The staff there said that the type of Mersa my relative had was only contagious "on contact" (for ex, if saliva got in through somebody else's small cut or abrasion). Therefore, we were not required, or even offered, to wear any type of protective clothing. My relative passed away a few nights ago. The mortuary staff said a vigil was not recommended due to her having had such a contagious infection. When we explained what the hospital staff had said to the mortuary, they said that that was not the first time that that happened at that particular hospital. That all types of Mersa are extremely contagious. An independent nurse has told us the same thing. Who should we believe - the hospital staff who insists that there is nothing to worry about or the mortuary???? Any and all information on this infection would be extremely helpful!
