10/7/01 my brother's 2 dogs were attacked by a skunk. He killed the skunk but destroyed the head in doing so. At the time, he thought both dogs had been vaccinated, however the older dog's shot had expired and the other was only 4-5 months old, too young to be vaccinated. The vet recommended that the dogs be confined for 90 days without contact or put to sleep. Questions: 1. Have humans who have been in contact with the dogs, i.e. licked, now exposes to rabies? 2. If so, what steps do we take for treatment? 3. How quickly is it necessary? 4. Will it be helpful for the dogs to receive shots now? 5. Initial plans were to kill the dogs, but since humans have been exposed to the dogs is this recommended? We have received conflicting information from vet, animal control, health department, etc. ANY ACCURATE INFORMATION IS GREATLY APPRECIATED ASAP!
