I am the mother of an eleven-year-old who has Bipolar. My mother and ex-husband also suffer from mental illness. I am currently taking a college Philosophy - Ethics class. I am preparing a presentation regarding the stigma involved with mental illness. I have been advocating for my daughter’s medical and educational issues for years. I find it UN-ethical that it is so difficult to get the schools to meet the needs of mentally ill children, so that they have the ability to receive education. There are no problems getting a ramp for a physically challenged child, why is it so hard to get emotional support for one. Health insurance companies do not tell a diabetic he can only get 8 insulin treatments per year, why the limit on psychotherapy for the mentally ill. And if the needs of these children are not met why should the rest of society care? Why is it an ethical and moral issue? Do we not care about the young or ill in this country? Do we want these kids to get pushed along in school not learning because their illness get in the way, I hate to see them fall through the cracks of the system. Why are 16% of the children in the Juvenile Justice System those with Mental Illness? What will happen to them later in life If they stay in a class with 30 other kids who learn in a way that they can't? I would like to get some feed back about how (you and/or your family) have felt the stigma related to mental illness and do you feel this is ethical or moral? And why should society care? I greatly appreciate your feed back. From, A Mom and person who cares.
