The aftermath of encopresis

Janine

Message 1 of 1

Hello, I am 26 and dating a great man who is now 27. He suffered through encopresis until he was 13 years old. I started researching this problem as time went by and I wanted to know if this was a hereditary condition...I would like to marry him, but want to know the chances of this condition being passed on to my children. If anyone has information on this topic, please help me out. Also, there is something I would like to make clear to all parents of children with this condition: support one another and don't be ashamed; seek all the help you can! My boyfriend was misunderstood, his parents gave up and he was abused as a result of his condition. Today he suffers from control issues, lack of self-confidence, deep shame, lack of sexual desire...you name it. Luckily he is seeking psychiatric help, and he has some very supportive friends who have cared for him deeply through the subsequent years. Please do everything in your power to get the problem diagnosed and treated early. I know it is not easy, and I can only imagine the struggle and anguish you must be feeling. But for the sake of your child's emotional future, don't ever give up. My prayers and thoughts are with you all. This is such a little-known and even lesser-talked-about illness. Let's hope the stigmas will start to come away in the sharing of experiences. God bless.
