herniated after-surgery pain

Michelle

Message 1 of 1

I had a cervical diskectomy on c5/6 and c6/7 with cadaver bone fusion and titanium brace seven days ago. Am having pain in right shoulder and down right arm. Before surgery, it was the LEFT side giving me trouble. Doc gave me 5 days worth of pain meds (percocet) and am now out and in pain. He seems to think that I can sail along just fine now and is reluctant to perscribe any more meds. Is this pain after surgery normal? I am wearing a hard collar. Can anyone suggest a combo of over-counter meds that will help. Or a good non-nacotic that I can ask him for? Cannot take aspirin products, ibprofen, alleve, vioxx - several of the over-the-counter available meds because they kick off my ulcerative colitus (anything that says may promote stomach bleeding, etc). He perscribed Vioxx for me before surgery and it kicked colitus off after two days. I CAN take tylenol - but it does nothing for pain. Muscle relaxers do nothing either - except put me to sleep. I don't want to spend the next month asleep! Have tried heat, and the product "Icy Hot." Am I being a baby or does my doc lack compassion like others had warned me about with him? At that time - I did not care because he was supposed to be one of the best in this area. Now I care about it because it hurts worse than before. Have a follow up appt in two days. Signed, a 43 year old female who likes to bike, swim and snowski.
