Surgery is never a miracle answer. It may help alleviate the symptoms. The symptoms may remain unchanged. Or, under rare circumstances, they could be worse. I had lumbar surgery in 1984 (herniated L3-4) which I believe was very successful. But it will never be normal, and never be 100%. I knew that when I went in. It depends on what symptoms specifically you hope to eliminate by surgery. In my case, it was the pain and symptoms running down my leg and into my foot. Removing the disk released the nerve impingement, thus the leg pain was successfully pain eliminated. But the lower back, itself is forever prone to reinjury, and it reminds me if I get careless. Before opting for surgery, discuss thoroughly with the surgeon what your hopes and expectations would be so that you can make a confidant and informed decision. Good luck!
