My son has adhd - diag when he was 4 - and there is just a ton of info and books out there but I can tell you how I knew. He couldn't settle down in school and do his work appropriately without bothering the other kids. The other kids disliked him, he had very few friends. He had no impulse control - always in trouble. You didn't say how old your child is but if he is in school and they are not telling you he has add but still having trouble with his school work, I would have him tested(independent of the schools) for learning disabilities.
