I, too, sustained a traumatic brain injuy (TBI) as a young child. The healing process for individuals with TBI is a very slow and sometimes frustrating process for those caring for these individuals. Unfortunately, there is no magic panacia. Recovery takes many years and sometimes full recovery is never reached. I believe that your family is in the very early stages of recovery. It is difficult to judge how one will recover from a frontal lobe injury. Many families relate a change in personality and relationship difficulties. The only thing I can promise you is that it will take time. Try not to rush into the recovery process. It took me several years to recover from my injury and even today I am left with some residual paralysis on the left side of my body. I am sorry I can't offer you more hope regarding your loved one.
