About 27 years ago I had a spinal fusion done at the L5S1 level. After spending six months in a hip to chest cast, and then a body girdle.I slowly recovered, and my strength returned.I resumed all my sports, such as tennis,Badminton, and other activities. Today I am still active, but to a lesser degree, being retired at age 72.I still bowl 3/4 times a week,do workout at the gym,and swim.I tell you all this because I was also concerned about surgery. There are procedures today that are much simpler than when I had mine, and does not entail long term in a cast. For your information, mine was done at The Montreal Neurological Institute,in Montreal,Canda. To this day I do not regret having the surgery.
