Darren, Emphysema is not cureable, but its progress can be slowed greatly by stopping smoking and getting the proper treatment from a good pulmonologist (lung doctor). Tell your girlfriend that she should try to stop smoking as soon as possible!!! If she needs help to do that, tell her to ask her doctors!!! This is of major importance for her!!! There are many wonderful support groups both in the community and here on the internet! Don't be afraid to utilize them. I currently belong to a lung group and an arthritis group that deals with all forms of arthritis! They are most helpful, and are filled with people who truly understand what you're going through and who have tremendous resources for finding information on medications, doctors, exercise, etc. Good luck to both you and your girlfriend!!!
