I am a pediatric hospice nurse. I find that few nurses, even hospice nurses, are able to function in this very specialized area. I am convinced that this is not a matter of competency or the ability to learn. Rather, it is an emotional block that prevents terminally ill children from receiving adequate care as they approach the end of their lives. I would like to gather information from nurses and other health care workers who have lost children in their personal lives. I would like to know how they have coped with the loss and how this has effected their professional lives, in caring for their patients, specifically, terminally ill patients. Ultimately, I would like to develop some type of mechanism that will improve our ability to peform in this needed field. I am open to any information contributing to this topic.
