Dawn, Please consider getting a consultation with a child psychiatrist and a psychologist for your daughter's problem while she is still young. This condition seldom goes away by doing nothing. As time goes by and she does not speak in school, it becomes harder for her to start talking. There are many ways to help your daughter and professional consultation can educate you and provide treatment. There are several good articles to explain this disorder. There is a child's book to read with your child titled Cat's Got Your Tongue? byCharles E. Schaefer,Ph.D. Get more information at www.selective mutism.org. As a mental health professional who has treated several cases of selective mutism and a mother of three children, I encourage you to get help as soon as possible. Sincerely, sharon D.
