I'm 16 yr. old and I had worn milwaukee brace since I 11. Just August last year I consulted another orthopedic and he adviced me to take off my brace and so I did because I have been wanting to take it off since a classmate of mine who also has scoliosis told me that wearing brace for a long period of time is not advisable. She told me that wearing brace would cause my muscles to weaken and furthermore I will not be able to walk. My problem now is that I can obviously see the progress of curvature of my thoracolumbar scoliosis. I think that everyday as I look myself in the mirror whenever I reach home from school the curve is getting worse and my left ribs are sticking out more. But when I do some exercise it gets better. Is this a sign that my spinal is not yet very strong and I have to wear my brace back? However, I did not totally stop wearing my brace since at nighttime I still wear it because I am so anxious to see my posture in the mirror. Am I doing the right thing? Another I problem is that if ever I continue wearing my brace, I'm worried about my skin because it has already gotten dark marks due to the tightness of my brace. My former doctor had said that wearing brace should be tight. Do I need to wear brace or do I have a choice of just doing some exercises everyday? I have also read about STRS on the net and I got interested about it but most of the subjects that I have read were difficult for me to understand. Can you tell me if there are STRS centers here in the Philippines? If there are none, kindly help me with my problem. Do I need to wear my brace back and the scars on my skin? If I don't need to, kindly tell me the proper exercises that I need to do for my scoliosis. My scoliosis is 15 degrees. I know it's not so bad but I'm still hoping that it will get to normal. Thank you for giving time in reading my mail and knowing my problem.
