i was diagnosed at age 18, i am now 28. i had the lazer surgery at age 18, and have had normal pap smears ever since. my doctor told me that after 5 years, if i keep getting normal pap smears, that it probably won't ever come back. the virus still stays in the body, but it is dormant, like sleeping. so if my HPV is not active, i am not contagious. HPV is a virus, there are NO cures for viruses. it causes abnormal cells to grow in a woman's cervix. sometimes these cells can be cancerous, if left untreated over time. that is why its important to get pap tests done regularly. they can treat HPV with a few different things. your doctor will discuss what stage your HPV is in, and what treatments are available to you. and if you ever feel like your doctor isn't explaining, tell him/her that!!! you have a right to KNOW what is wrong with YOUR body. don't worry!!!!! you will be ok. they can get HPV under control. make sure you get your pap smears on schedule. that will insure you get treated properly and on time. good luck and take care tonia
