I am 20 years old and have just been diagnosed with Chiari 1 and am pretty scared. Every bit of literature I have found says decompression surgery is the only treatment for this disease. It also explains that left untreated it can cause severe complications including paralysis. The neurologist that diagnosed me was going to put me on a beta blocker to treat me and told me to come in 3 months after having taken this medicine every day. I refused to be put on this medicine and am in the process of getting a second opinion. I would like to know what your thoughts are on my situation and what my next step should be. I have my mri films and it states that my tonsils are herniated downward 9mm & that there is a lot of white matter in the pictures. I also wanted to know if this is a disease that can be covered under disability because I know I will be off work for a while if I have surgery and I will not get paid for it. Please help me in any way that you can. Many thanks, Brittney
