BSE/ Mad Cow Disease

Heather

Message 1 of 1

Ok, I live in Germany at the moment. Last night I went with a bunch of friends to an out-of-the-way Italian Restaurant (that had been recommended by another restaurant that had been booked). Without thinking about it, I ordered a grilled beef steak. As is common in Europe, the steak was cooked rare, so I had it taken back and cooked more. It still wasn't cooked ALL the way through, so I just ate around the center. All of a sudden an unpleasant thought plagued my mind: mad cow disease. Obviously, it was too late, I had already eaten most of the steak, but needless to say, it ruined the rest of my night. Although Germany is known for its strict health standards regarding beef, as most of you probably know, BSE has recently been detected in Germany's cows. Plus, it was reluctant to change its patterns regarding cow feed. Althought I was equally at risk when I ate steaks and Spaghetti Bolongnese while living in Belgium, the thought of mad cow disease never crossed my mind until now. It probably STILL wouldn't have crossed my mind, had somene at my college refused to eat meat sauce on their spaghetti, recently, due to the BSE scare. I am 18 years old. Is there anything at all I can do? Any words of hope at all? Please reply. Thanks!
