Robyn: I am so sorry to hear about your friend. My father died in 1986 from having been exposed to asbestos in the Navy when they were refurbishing ships for WWII. It took over 40 years for his symptoms to become severe. One thing you can tell your friend is not to smoke. The oncologist told us that anything that weakens the lungs can bring on the disease faster. The cancer related to asbestosis is called mesotheomia. Unfortunately, once the asbestis fibers are in your lungs, they stay there and will sooner or later do damage. It is truly a heart wrenching thing to watch your loved one die in such a horrible way. My heart goes out to you.
