I'm 18 years old and I've just been diagnosed with a very severe case of interstital cystitus. I've compleatly lost the will to live and these messages haven't helped. But I figure I will share the diet information my doctor gave me. I was surprised by many of the things on it. I hope it helps. RECOMMENDATIONS DURING TREATMENT FOR INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS: !. Avoid acid fruits (citrus fruits-grapefruit, oranges, tomatoes, etc.), and their juices. Also avoid vitamin C, cranberries, vinegar, strawberries, grapes, guava, mango, and pineapple. May have reduced-acid Minute Maid juice found in frozen food section. * OK to have: plums, melons, apples apricots, peaches, pears. 2. Avoid carbonated beverages and coffee as they are high in acidity. You may have Kava coffee. no koolaid! 3. No wine, champagne, beer, cheese, nuts, yogurt, bananas, soy sauce, chicken livers, raisins, sour cream, avocados, canned figs, corned beef, fava beans, brewer’s yeast or chocolate as they have tyramine which causes burning. You may have white chocolate or caramels. * OK to have: processed cheese, cottage cheese, and cream cheese 4. Pyridium should be taken for 24 hours following DMSO treatment to reduce symptoms (see prescription) It is now available as Re-Azo or Azo-standard over the counter without a prescription. 5. Vitamin therapy is essential. Please take Dual Tab Centrum one/day, and 200 mg Magnesium. The magnesium comes as Mg-Ox 400 mg tablets. Vitamin B6 should also be taken, as 50 mg twice daily. 6. Take one Tums four times a day to alkalinize your urine. 7. If your symptoms are severe, you may take one teaspoon of baking soda in water in order to alkalinize your urine. this should help your symptoms. 8. If constipation develops, take 2 tablespoons of Wheat Bran (may sprinkle on cereal) daily.
