Lisa, I don't know what the future holds. But, my 23 yr old daugther is shunted (she is also a pediatric nurse) and we have a sone 15 who is affected as well, however, in Canada, there is a new procedure being done called a Ventreculostmy. Much easier than the shunt and it is now being offer to my older child, in the event she goes into shunt block. The would removed the tubeing into peritium and create a new route for the fluid to flow between the ventricals. It can mean a world of changes. Such as it does not need to be revised all the time. And that cuts down on hospitalizations. The need procedure only takes 45 minutes and the child is able to go home in 4 days. It is a really good advance. Not only that but my 15 yr old had a classmate just diaaagnoised with this and had the same surgery. Both are back doing full studies and playing sports. Hope this encourages you keep trying.
