Getting the right test for genital herpes can be VERY difficult. Most Drs will use a viral culture which very often returns a false negative result (it says you don't have the disease when in fact you do). Others rely on blood tests. These can be more accurate than culture but beware, a lot of blood tests can give false positive results (they say you have genital herpes when, in fact, you have the virus which causes cold sores on your mouth). Be very sure that you get a "type-specific" blood test for HSV-2, the main cause of genital herpes. There are only a very few of these tests available and they include the "Western Blot" (available from Unievrsity of Washington, Seattle) and the POCkit HSV2 Test.
