hemochromatosis

Sandi, When you say your son's iron level was 41, I think you may be referring to his hematocrit? A high hct can be present in patients with hemochromatosis, but is not always. The proper tests to be done to determine if he has hemochromatosis are serum iron, serum ferritin, TIBC (total iron binding capacity), and percent saturation. You should ask specifically for these tests and ask to see the results for yourself. If he is diabetic and is having other problems then he should certainly be followed up by a physician. Is he seeing an endocrinologist for the diabetes? Diabetes can be caused by iron depositing in the pancreas from hemochromatosis. I would arm yourself with as much information as you can find, present it to your physician, and demand that he follow-up. This is how I was diagnosed.
