my son did not have spina bofida but he does have kyphosis of the spine he had to have surgery when he was 10 months old and was in a body cast for 5 months i can give you advice on the cast my son was in his cast during the hot summer and would get heat rash so i would take a very long q-tip with cortisone cream and stick it up in his cast and rub the cream all over his skin this would help with the horrible heat rash and irritation also my son was still in diapers so you can imagine the problem i had i would use a newborn diaper and stick it in the cast to cover his groin area and then over that i would either use a depend or 2 size 6 diapers put together to cover and that would help to keep urine and other things from getting into the cast and causing that horrible smell also since they are so heavy in the cast i would pull my son around in a wagon he loved it he that he was something else and it helped my back.my advice about the dr is i've always heard the spine and hip is nothing to mess with but feel free to get a 2nd opinion you ought to try shriners hospital if you are accepted there the medical care is free and they have the best of the best doctors hope i helped you some
