I'm 39 and have Crohn's disease. I disagree with the high-fiber diet that you mother's doctor is prescribing. Chicken broth's or chicken soup, pasta's, pudding, bread and sometimes eggs are great when the disease is at it's worst. Then she can gradually add chicken or fish, peeled or canned fruits, steamed vegetables (carrots and squash are the easiest to digest). She can gradually increase her diet to add regular foods, but she should avoid spicy foods, nuts, popcorn, no apple or peach peels, lettuce or tomatoes. Avoiding caffeine and alcohol are always a good suggestion, but especially when you have diverticulitis. Milk shakes (add bananas, or canned peaches) will help her to gain weight, unless she has difficulty with dairy products. She should also avoid red meats and chocolate. I know how hard it is, but if she keeps her diet on the bland side, living without the pain is worth it. Good luck. P.S. Add peppermint to her diet it helps to heal the intestines and reduce pain.
