Mary N.
I have a severe potassium deficiency (hypokalemia) of unknown origins that has been slowly worsening over the past 5 years. I am now up to 24 K-Dur 20 MEQ tablets per day to keep my level at the low end of normal and have had to add magnesium to that in the last year. The usual causes have been ruled out. My doctors are stumped and are currently just treating the symptoms, but I would like to find the root of the problem - preferably before I have to go on Medicare where prescriptions aren't covered! Does anyone else have this problem??? I also have high blood pressure (since age 25 - am now 50) and diabetes type II, non-insulin dependent (diagnosed 12/95), but these do not seem to affect the hypokalemia. If you have, or know of, a similar case, please let me know.
